  1. Well done Kenric, the use of tone in color really gives the composition that clear water feeling. The use of value tought was correctly manteined trough out the composition

  2. 2. What role does texture have in the composition? (Detail, pattern, space, and/or design). Be specific, if texture missing or weak include that also.

Texture seems to play a very prominent role in this composition, specifically the background. The background appears to have a water droplet pattern throughout the image. Even the faucet gives the appearance that if you touch it, you will feel its metal.

  3. What role does texture have in the composition? (Detail, pattern, space, and/or design). Be specific, if texture missing or weak include that also.

Texture is used well in this design. The canvas type background texture enhances the image and helps the other elements stand out. I think you chose just the right size for the pattern. I also think the radial gradient is a good addition that helps add interest to the background. This is a very clean design.

  4. How effectively was the concept of “green-ness” explored? Do you think that this student used the elements of value, texture and color effectively to enhance the concept, how did the branding of the song interplay if at all?

The concept of greenness is explored in this design through economics, sustainability, and ecology. The elements of value (gradients), texture (background) and color are used throughout to strengthen the concept. The bright and cheerful design is a good companion to the upbeat tune of the song “I’m Yours”.

  5. 5. What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Would this design work well as a billboard or for multi-purpose advertising? Does the concept of sustainability as far as water the strongest focus of the piece?, Please explain in detail.

The more I look at Kenric’s composition the more I like it! I keep noticing details I did not see before. I think this is a well thought out project with a lot of attention to detail. He was careful to include all the design elements that we have covered in a very cohesive way. The concept of water sustainability is very prevalent and the obvious focus of this piece. I especially like the shadow of the faucet with the recycle image coming out of it. Due to the orientation of the composition, it would not work well on a billboard or bus-side without some “tweaking” of the dimensions and layout, which I think might alter the flow of the image. It would however, make a great public poster or brochure cover.

  6. Question 3: Project 2 Critique – Color
How is color used in the overall composition? Which colors dominate which reinforce the concept? How is color value used in composition? Be specific and use terms related to color.

    Hello, Kenric!

The colour in the overall composition is very effective, using a lot of green, blue and cyan. The cool tones evoke a pleasant calmness to the image. The blues work very well together even when the water droplets are obviously from different graphic sets. Personally, I would have adjusted the droplets so they all all matched in colouring for more continuity.

The yellow-green lettering help move the eye through the s-curve design of the canvas.

Colour value is predominantly used to emulate implied 3D shapes. Tints and shades are used to sculpt the simple shapes.

The colour gradient helps bring focus to the middle of the canvas.

And although this critique is about colour, I think the textured gradient background helps tie all the elements together.
